If you’re looking for one solid reason to pick this smartphone, its stunning design is the standout feature. From a standpoint, the Nothing Phone 2 is larger in every dimension compared to its predecessor, including its overall size. Surprisingly, it’s easy to use with just one hand, even if it’s comparable to the iPhone 14 Pro Max of Apple. This ease of use is enhanced by the phone’s lightweight nature and thoughtful design details. Like the curved edges of the glass on the back, ensuring a comfortable and secure grip.
The Eye-Catching Look with Glyph Interface
The appearance of the Nothing Phone 2 is truly attention-grabbing. Thanks in large part to the Glyph Interface on the phone’s back. This time, the LED strips are divided into smaller sections, offering users more choices for identifying notifications. Just like before, the Glyph Interface lights up for various things like phone calls and notifications.
What’s new this time is the support for third-party apps, which makes the Glyph Interface even more useful. For instance, when you’re waiting for an Uber ride, the Nothing Phone 2 will show a timer. With the help of lights let you know how much time is left. It’s handy because these notifications are subtle, meaning you don’t have to keep unlocking your phone to check. Right now, Uber is the only third-party app that works with it, but we expect more to join soon.
While we appreciate the little things, like being able to make custom ringtones with the glyph composer. We were hoping that the lights would do more than just notifications. Currently, there are only a few light patterns that we can remember to know what they mean. That’s why we wish Nothing could have added more colors to make them stand out. Or maybe the option for some random light effects while using the phone. We think this would make this feature and the phone itself even more attention-grabbing.
A Bigger and Sharper Display for Nothing Phone 2
The Nothing Phone 2 boasts a larger 6.7-inch OLED display, a step up from the 6.55-inch panel on the Nothing Phone 1. This new screen offers a resolution of 2,412 x 1,080 pixels, delivering sharp and detailed visuals. Additionally, with a pixel density of 394 pixels per inch (ppi), the details on this 6.7-inch display look incredibly crisp. Colors are vibrant without being overly saturated, a refreshing change compared to some phones with AMOLED displays.
Moreover, the Nothing Phone 2 offers a delightful video-watching experience, thanks in part to its smooth 120Hz refresh rate and wide viewing angles. The display’s thin bezels and small punch-hole cutout for the front-facing camera add to its appeal. However, one minor drawback is that the screen can be challenging to see outdoors in bright sunlight, often requiring you to shield it with your hand for better visibility.
Performance
When we put the performance test, we were pleasantly surprised by how fast it was, especially for a midrange phone. In many cases, using the Nothing Phone felt smoother and snappier than the Pixel 7a in everyday tasks. Such as opening apps, sending emails, browsing the web, and navigating the interface.
We also ran synthetic benchmark tests, and the results showed a significant performance boost compared to its predecessor. Our review unit is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip paired with 12GB of RAM, and this combination led to impressive scores in tests like GeekBench 5.5 and 3DMark Wildlife Unlimited.
However, it’s worth mentioning that in real-world testing, the Nothing Phone 2 even outperformed the Pixel 7a. The phone displays fluid movements and quick responses, which can be attributed in part to its 120Hz refresh rate. Even when it came to gaming, we were impressed by how well it handled rendering the expansive world map in games, even during intense battles with lots happening on screen.
Camera – Bright Spots & Dim Lights
Following a somewhat lackluster camera performance with the Nothing Phone 1, there was considerable anticipation for the Nothing Phone 2. This year’s rear camera setup includes a 50MP f/1.88 main camera paired with a 50MP f/2.2 ultrawide lens. On paper, this configuration may seem similar to what the Nothing Phone 1 offered, but the main camera now boasts a newer sensor.
Nothing emphasizes the phone’s advanced 18-bit Image Signal Processor (ISP) system, which is supposed to gather more data for improved dynamic range performance. We must say that when conditions are optimal, the Nothing Phone 2 performs admirably. For instance, while it tends to produce warmer tones, it captures impressive details that are worth sharing on social media.
The same can be said for the 50MP ultrawide camera on the Nothing Phone 2. Its 114-degree field of view allows you to capture more of the scene without needing everyone to squeeze together to fit in the frame. However, following an update to Nothing OS 2.0.1, the Nothing Phone 2 did a better job applying the background blur effect to my portrait shots.
Regrettably, there hasn’t been significant improvement in making the Nothing Phone 2 a strong performer in low-light conditions. It struggles in such scenarios, resulting in photos that appear smeared and more like paintings than actual photographs.
Overall, the Nothing Phone 2 is not a bad camera for a phone, but its weakness in low-light situations is notable. If you primarily shoot in well-lit conditions, it’s a capable camera phone that can get the job done—especially if you have photo editing skills to enhance photo quality.
Battery & Charging – Upgrades on Nothing Phone 2
With its larger size compared to its predecessor, the Nothing Phone 2 houses a beefier 4,700 mAh battery under the hood. In real-world use, it proves to be above average, often retaining over 25% battery capacity by bedtime. This is particularly impressive, considering the drain on the battery when indulging in resource-intensive activities like playing Age of Origins.
But that’s not all. Nothing didn’t stop at just making the battery bigger; they also enhanced the phone’s charging capabilities. The Nothing Phone 2 now supports 45W wired charging, a step up from its predecessor’s 33W charging speed. Additionally, Qi wireless charging sees an improvement, with support for 15W charging. In all honesty, we have to give Nothing credit for refocusing on the rich customization possibilities of Android. It’s a refreshing approach that earns a spot on our list of the best-looking Android interfaces.
Nothing OS 2.0 maintains its minimalist aesthetics, but what truly stands out are the new Nothing widgets. These widgets contribute to the phone’s visual identity with their dot matrix-like designs. Notably, the clock and weather widgets showcase clean fonts and monochrome icons, adding to the overall charm.
This beautiful interface runs on top of Android 13. Unlike some other Android phone manufacturers that pile on additional software features—think of Samsung’s One UI with its shortcut ticker—Nothing keeps things simple and user-friendly. Even if you’re not well-versed in Android, navigating the Nothing Phone 2 is a breeze.
